PROPERTY TAX REBATES & EXEMPTIONS AVAILABLE FOR VETERANS

ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP (10/31/06) – As Veterans Day nears, Aberdeen Township advised that residents who are eligible for special State of New Jersey property tax rebates and exemptions for Armed Forces veterans can obtain the applications and file them at the Township Municipal Building. Filing assistance is also available.

The Veteran or Surviving Spouse of Veteran or Service Person Property Tax Deduction provides a $250 rebate to those who had active wartime service in the United States Armed Forces or their surviving spouse.  The veteran must have been honorably discharged.

A second program provides full exemption from property taxes on a principal residence for certain totally and permanently disabled war veterans and their unmarried surviving spouses. Unmarried surviving spouses of service persons who died on wartime active duty may also qualify. Veterans must have been honorably discharged.

Applications can be obtained by calling the Township at (732) 583-4200, ext. 122, by visiting the Aberdeen Township Municipal Building located at 1 Aberdeen Square, or online at www.aberdeennj.org.  Forms are also available on the State of New Jersey Division of Taxation website:  www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation or at the Monmouth County website: www.visitmonmouth.com.

Aberdeen residents can bring their completed applications to the Municipal Building, where the Township Tax Assessor will handle the paperwork and file the application with the State of New Jersey.

“This important program from the state provides some measure property tax relief and, in certain cases, complete exemption for veterans who have sacrificed for our country,” said Councilman Tom Perry, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, who went on to serve for over five years on active duty in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Captain, and later as a Company Commander in the Army Reserve, 78th Division. “We are pleased that our Assessors’ office will be assisting Aberdeen veterans with this process.”

For more information, please call the Aberdeen Township Tax Assessor at (732) 583-4200, ext. 122.
