PLANS FOR ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP 150TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
 PRESENTED AT TOWNSHIP COUNCIL MEETING

ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP (2/6/07) – The Aberdeen Township Council tonight reviewed initial plans for the township’s 150th Anniversary Celebration that will include a series of special events and programs running from February to November.

At its February 20th meeting, the Council will issue a proclamation commemorating the municipality’s actual ‘birthday’ of February 23, and formally announce the details of an essay contest for Township children.

The celebration’s series of festivities will kick-off on Sunday, April 29th with a Birthday Bash at Aberdeen Town Hall that will include an open house, scavenger hunt, giveaways, video clips of township memories, birthday cake, announcement of the essay contest winners, and an evening choir fest featuring groups from Aberdeen houses of worship.

On Saturday, May 12, the township will present a day and evening Beach Fest at Cliffwood Beach. Planned activities include the Environmental & Shade Tree Board’s annual fishing contest, as well as volleyball, capped off by a clambake with concessions offering fare ranging from clams, fried fish and crab legs to Smores, and an outdoor evening presentation of the popular family movie ‘Shark Tales.’

Another ‘Movie in the Park’ night is scheduled for Friday, June 28, with a to-be-announced feature film geared to 12- to 16-year-olds

The anniversary celebration will continue with free Thursday evening concerts on July 19 and August 9.  The July concert will carry a ‘Doo Wop Night’ theme, complete with a car show and costumed dance instructors. Details on the August concert will be announced.

On Saturday, September 15, the township’s annual Aberdeen Day celebration will honor the 150th Anniversary with an evening concert and laser light show. Throughout the day, attendees will be able to enjoy live entertainment, a car show, rides and vendors.

The celebration will continue throughout the fall with the Aberdeen Sesquicentennial 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, October 28.

The 150th anniversary celebration will come to an end on Thursday, November 29, with Holiday Fest, featuring performances by school choruses and the awarding of Aberdeen Sesquicentennial medallions.

Aberdeen was originally incorporated in 1857 as “Matavan Township.”  In 1882, the spelling was changed to “Matawan Township.”  In 1977, residents voted to change the name to Aberdeen Township to create a community identity separate from that of neighboring municipality Matawan.  The name was derived from “New Aberdeen,” the designation for a settlement established in northwestern Monmouth County in the 1680s by Friends and Presbyterians who fled Scotland to avoid religious persecution.

“We look forward to celebrating this important milestone for our Township with this series of events,” said Councilman Vincent Vinci. “These activities are designed to inform and entertain, as well as enhance the strong feeling of community that Aberdeen residents have long enjoyed.”

“As we move forward in executing these programs, we invite anyone who would like to contribute an idea or two or volunteer their time, to contact township manager Stuart Brown,” added Councilman Nicholas Minutolo
